Job offer by email scams

These scams are also very common and involve mass emails being sent, offering a great job, usually with high pay for low effort. They inevitably ask for personal details such as your full name, date of birth, driver's license details and bank account number. These types of emails rarely address you directly by name, and come out of the blue, when you haven't even applied for a job. If you have been applying for jobs and are uncertain about an email you have received, it pays to find contact details for the company from a trusted source, such as the Yellow Pages, and contact the company directly to confirm. You can also contact us on 0508 NETSAFE (0508 638723) or email us at queries@netsafe.org.nz.

These scams sometimes request the use of your bank account to help the emailer get money out of their country, for one reason or another. In exchange, you are allowed to keep a percentage of the money. This is money laundering, which is illegal. As in all illegal scams, if you are discovered, it is highly likely that you will not get to keep the money, and may even be prosecuted.
