Organised Cyber Crime in our backyard, and in your computer

This week’s move by the FBI and NZ Police to shut down a massive computer BotNet, controlled from New Zealand, is a timely reminder that large scale cyber based organised crime is not something that only happens “over there”. Although this is the first time a New Zealander has been arrested as the BotNet controller (“Bot Herder”), many New Zealanders will already unknowingly have been recruited into a Botnet and involved in Botnet activities.

Increasingly Believable Internet Scams Catch Kiwis
Internet Safety Group (ISG) - Media Release 1 September 2007
New Zealand’s Internet Safety Group, NetSafe has experienced an upsurge in calls from Kiwis caught in internet scams. NetSafe Executive Director Martin Cocker says, “even people who are well aware of common scams and who are cautious with online transactions can be fooled. Some people have lost money, others have contacted us before doing a deal – just to check if what they are about to do is legitimate. ”

Online Banking - Protecting money is a joint responsibility

In the light of conflicting argument surrounding the internet banking section of the Code of Banking Practice (4th Ed), NetSafe wishes to advise online banking customers of some important facts.

• The Code of Banking Practice does not override an individual bank’s terms and conditions. The terms and conditions for online banking varies considerably across banks (in terms of fraud liability). NetSafe advises customers to carefully review their bank’s terms and conditions to ascertain whether their current level of security is considered adequate.

107 Auckland Kindergartens Tackle Technology Risks For Under 5s

This week 350 Auckland Kindergarten Association (AKA) teachers will be trained about keeping their kindergartens safer when using information and communication technology (ICT) .

The training is being delivered by Edict Systems in conjunction with the Auckland Kindergarten Association. Director of Edict Systems, Ian Newson says, “many services are using information and communication technology like digital cameras, computers and the internet as a part of their everyday functioning. Centres need to have strategies in place to help protect their staff and children from some of the risks that can accompany the use of technology”.
