The Internet Safety Group - NetSafe®, New Zealand Police, Telecom NZ, and Vodafone NZ meet to address text bullying and harassment
The Internet Safety Group - NetSafe® met with representatives of the New Zealand Police, Vodafone NZ and Telecom NZ today as part of an ongoing process designed to address incidents of bullying and harassment associated with mobile phones.
All parties are very aware of the seriousness of text bullying and harassment and are
committed to joint efforts supporting the prosecution of serious cases.
In addition, today's meeting established a framework for the development of consistent, robust processes across the telcos in responding to text bullying and harassment.
These processes will build on the existing services offered by Telecom and Vodafone (available through their customer service centres) with two key aims:
1) Providing additional support to both young people and adults who are the targets of text bullying and harassment in cases where there are threats of harm
2) Assisting the Police to take appropriate and timely action against offenders, including prosecutions.
NetSafe runs a helpline 0508 NETSAFE (0508 638 723) and can advise people on the options available to them if they are being bullied or harassed on their mobiles or online.
