NetSafe Invite-Only Symposium Kicks Off Tomorrow

The 2006 NetSafe Cybersafety & Security Online Symposium kicks off tomorrow in Wellington. 

Cybersafety and Security experts from around New Zealand and the world will gather for two days to look at child safety, network security (businesses, schools and community agencies), online confidence (secure transactions), and the e-crime challenges for law enforcement and our legal system.

Key speakers include:

•         The Honourable Luamanuvao Winnie Laban, Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector, Associate Minister of Pacific Island Affairs, Associate Minister for Social Development and Employment, and Associate Minister for Economic Development.

•         Dr Ilene Berson, Associate Professor and Director of the Consortium for Child Welfare Studies at the Department of Child and Family Studies University of South Florida. Dr Ilene Berson will be looking at why the very young are especially at risk in the online environment with a focus onrecent research and prevention strategies to mitigate risks for cyber-exploitation and abuse.

•         Howard Broad, Commissioner of New Zealand Policewill be looking at responding to e-crime in New Zealand.

•         David Sykes, Managing Director and Vice President of Symantec’s Pacific Region.  David will be presenting a keynote address on recent trends in online security with a focus on retaining consumer confidence in the digital world.

•         Dr Michael Berson, Professor in the Secondary Education Department at the University of South Florida.Dr Michael Berson will give an overview of Internet safety initiatives in schools throughout the United States, compare U.S. strategies with selected examples from other nations, and discuss emerging research evidence on successful approaches to engage children in assessing risky situations, developing appropriate coping techniques, and practicing responsible decision making online.
