How can I text
How can I text?
Just as you learn to read and write when you start school, texting has it’s own language (‘text lingo’) that is loosely based on the English language. Text lingo makes words shorter and thus easier to read and write.
Because it’s easier to talk to people and understand what they mean when you speak the same language, it’s important to learn text lingo before starting to text on your mobile. That way people will understand what you are ‘saying’
Text lingo has some simple rules, like:
o Using capital letters (LIKE THIS) can make it look like you’re shouting. Use lowercase letters (like this) unless you want to shout with excitement (like saying, “It’s my birthday TODAY!”)
o Single letters can sometimes take the place of sounds. For example, the letter ‘k’ can sometimes be used instead of the sound ‘ch’ (as in ‘school’). ‘R’ can be used instead of ‘are’ (like, “R u coming?”)
o Some words can be replaced by numbers that sound the same. Stop and think for a moment; can you guess what some of them are?
Instead of writing ‘to’, ‘two’ or ‘too’, you can use the number ‘2’
‘For’ or ‘four’ can be replaced by the number ‘4’
‘8’ sounds like the word ‘ate’ and is often used in words that have that sound in them (like, “I’m going to be l8”).
