Identity theft

Social networking: Identity theft

Identity theft happens when someone uses your personal information to pretend to be you. For example, they might use your nick name in a chat room, pretending to be you when they chat with other people. They may send emails that look as if they’re from you when they’re not. In the most extreme examples, people can steal your identity to bully and harass other people, and may even try to hack into things like your email or bank account!

Identity theft can be illegal. Talk to an organisation like NetSafe about what can be done to stop it.
