Being careful with other people's info
Just as you’d be careful about what personal information you give out about yourself online, it’s also a good idea to be careful about sharing other people’s information. You might be surprised at some of the ways you can accidentally share information about your family and friends.
One of the main ways that information can be shared accidentally is when emails that you sent to someone are sent onto other people who you didn’t mean to see it. Perhaps you want to share that really funny joke that your cousin sent you with your friends. Before you press the send button though, think about what personal information is contained in the email:
- Is there a signature at the end of the email? If there is, it's a good idea to delete it before you send the email to anyone else, so that you’re not sharing anyone’s personal info with other people.
- Are you forwarding the email to more than one person? If so, it could be a good idea to use the bcc (blind carbon copy) option in the address bar of the email; that way, the addresses of the people you are sending it to are hidden.
- Make sure that you only share the part of the email that you really want to share. You don’t want to forward the address of the person who sent you the email originally, or anything extra they may have added to it (like a personal greeting to you) so be sure to delete that sort of info before you press send.
