Always ask permission before posting
Because a lot of the photos and videos we take have other people in them, we need to be extra careful when thinking about posting them online.
Would you like it if you came across a video of yourself on the internet that you didn’t know was there? Especially if it was something that you thought was going to be private? Posting photos or videos of other people without asking is a bit like borrowing things from people without asking them first - we need to check out if it’s ok to post or send photos (or videos) of other people before doing it. When you’re asking permission, be sure to tell them:
- what photo/video of them you’d like to use
- why you’d like to post or send it to someone else
- where you’re thinking of posting or sending it
- who might see it (remember, anyone can see anything that you post online!).
If they say no, then respect that and don’t post the image.
Lucy's story
Lucy is still deciding whether or not to post the photos of her birthday party. A lot of the photos that she wants to post have her friends in them. There’s a great shot of her and her cousins from Australia, and another one of all the girls from Lucy’s Guides unit.
Lucy promises her mum she won’t post any personal info about anyone (like their names or what Guides Unit it is) with the photos. But the next question that her mum asks Lucy really surprises her: has she asked her friends if it’s ok to post their photos online?
