Viruses

A virus is a programme that reproduces itself by attaching itself to computer files or programmes. These files or programmes are then sent from one computer to another, usually via email attachments. Once in your computer, the virus can destroy information or attack the hard drive. Viruses can slow your computer right down or may even make your computer stop working.

When your computer is damaged by a virus, it’s said to be ‘infected’.

There are many different types of viruses. Three of the most common are file viruses, Trojan horses, and worms.

How do I avoid getting a virus?

Viruses can spread through infected software or through attachments on email or IM.

Always check with your parent or caregiver (or teacher if you are at school) before running a new programme on your computer, even if it has been given to you by a friend or someone you trust. You should also do a scan for viruses using your anti-virus software before running it. Check out the attachments page of our website for information on how protect yourself from viruses sent through email or IM.

You can also go to websites like Symantec.com or McAfee.com to keep up-to-date with the latest virus alerts. Be aware though that sometimes new viruses can arrive in your inbox before they are even identified by an anti-virus website!
