What happens to info you post

Social networking: What happens to info you post?

Some websites will ask you to enter personal details in order to fully make use of the site. This may include things like telling them your email address so you can enter competitions, or entering your name so that the page can be personalized with your name on it..

It can be tempting to enter your personal information online, particularly if it gives you access to parts of a website that you might not otherwise get to look at. However, there are some risks that you need to think about before telling personal information to anyone online.

But why can’t I enter my personal info online?

Any piece of personal information you put online can make it easier for someone to contact you in both the online and offline worlds. You might be thinking, “Cool, I can make some friends from all over the world!”. But in addition to the nice people you might want to speak with, there are also people who are using the internet to commit crimes (like identity theft). People may also use your personal details to steal from you, or pretend to be you in Cyberspace. Because of these reasons, we need to be careful about where we give out our personal details online.

Did you know . .

Stop and have a think about all of the information that exists about you on the internet at the moment. You may think you haven’t posted much, but in actual fact you may have posted a whole lot of small bits of information to a variety of different websites. Anyone surfing the net can find all of these bits of information and use them to put together a complete profile about you.

Activity

With your caregiver, type your full name into a popular search engine like Google. What websites come up? Is the information on them about you or someone with the same name as you? Do the same with your caregiver’s name.
