Your pics and videos
The internet can be a great way to share photos and videos of special times you’ve had with your family and friends. An important thing to remember, though, is that anyone who is searching the internet may come across them. This includes people who use the internet to do bad things, like stealing people’s personal information, hacking into people’s banks accounts, or misusing photos they come across.
To keep safe from people who may use the internet to try and harm you, it’s a good idea to never post personal info (like your name, school or address) with your photos. This makes sure that even if someone you don’t know finds your online photos or videos, they won’t know who you are or how to contact you.
Lucy’s story
Lucy asks her mum if she can post some photos from her 8th birthday party on the family’s website.
Her mum wants to make sure that Lucy knows all about the possible risks of posting photos online before she decides whether or not she’s allowed to do it. She asks Lucy if she’d be happy with a complete stranger looking at the photos. She tells Lucy that if she does decide she can post the photos, then one of the conditions would be that she’s not allowed to post any personal info with it. This includes stuff like her name, but also the address of her house (where the photo was taken) and even that it was her 8th birthday.
Lucy decides to think about things for a while before she posts the photos.
