Schools can help

The NetSafe Kit for Schools (2007) suggests that schools offer parent information evenings. Parents can come into the school and learn the simple skills necessary to effectively monitor the internet at home. School staff or a knowledgeable parent can explain filtering options and how to check the history of sites visited at home. Staff can also explain how parents can create their own internet Use Agreements with their children, using the sample one provided in the kit, setting out clear guidelines for internet use in your household.

Most importantly, parents can talk with one another and share strategies and concerns.  No parent is alone who is feeling a bit on the back foot as their kids race forward with the new technologies.  Talking it over with other parents can help.
