The NetSafe Programme for Schools: major components

  • The 2007 NetSafe Kit for Schools. Like its predecessors, the kit is based upon NetSafe's three core components of cybersafety:

- An infrastructure of policies, procedures and use agreements

- An effective electronic security system

- A comprehensive cybersafety education programme

The kit is the cornerstone in establishing and maintaining a cybersafe school and education system, and can be accessed here.

  • NetSafe Training Modules for key school personnel. These are a series of cybersafety and cyber security workshops that are designed to support school personnel. Click here to learn more.

  • NetSafe Incident Response Flowchart. The flowchartdetails how to best deal with a cybersafety incident, and can be accessed via the 2007 NetSafe Kit for Schools.
  • NetSafe School Alert Service. Schools can register for a heads-up early warning of significant risks to students’ online safety by emailing netsafeschoolalert@netsafe.org.nz
  • Helpline and Crisis Line. Support is available from the toll-free NetSafe helpline to assist schools work through a cybersafety incident. Call 0508 NETSAFE (638 723) or email queries@netsafe.org.nz
  • Referrals. NetSafe is able to provide referral information for the Ministry of Education’s Wellington-based Senior ICT Consultants, Police Youth Education Service (YES) officers, the NZ School Trustees Association (NZSTA), or forensic and legal specialists, among others.
  • NetSafe presentations, seminars, workshops, articles, interviews, and online forums
  • NetSafe research. The Net Generation (2002) and The Text Generation (2005) are of particular relevance to school communities.
  • NetSafe teaching resources. The ‘Cybercitizenship Pathway’ provides teachers and educators with a progression of appropriate learning objectives, suggested activities and recommended resources to match cybercitizenship attributes. Over time this resource will evolve into an interactive online database linking to New Zealand cybersafety resources such as Hector’s World TM, overseas resources, and lesson plans and feedback submitted by teachers. All resources will be accompanied by ideas for integration with The New Zealand Curriculum. Click here to find out more….
  • NetSafe brochures and posters available to schools. Click here for a full list.
  • Hector’s WorldTM,a cybersafety initiative for children of all ages. The programme includes the ‘Hector Safety ButtonTM’, a free download designed to protect young children and alert adults to potentially unsafe online situations. The Hector’s WorldTM website also includes a series of animated episodes, accompanied by teaching material and fun resources aimed at educating 2-10 year olds to be safe and responsible users of information and communication technologies.
