Mobile phone theft

Mobile phone theft has increased enormously over the past few years, not just in New Zealand, but around the world. Young people are a favourite target for mobile phone thieves, and it’s estimated that about 10,000 mobile phones were stolen in NZ over the past year.

If your phone is stolen, there is something you can do to stop the thief from being able to use your phone (and your sim card) ever again!

Each GSM Mobile Phone (including Vodafone phones) has a unique identifier, in addition to the SIM Card number. This is known as the International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI.
IMEI numbers from stolen phones are entered in the Equipment Identity Register (EIR) and this has the effect of 'blacklisting' them from the GSM network (so they won’t work on the NZ Vodafone network!).

Call Vodafone and the Police, and report your phone stolen. If you have your IMEI, let them know what it is and ask your Telecommunications company to register your phone on the EIR.
So, what are some ways to prevent your phone being stolen? Click here to find out!
