When should I go to the police

If you are receiving threatening, sexual or creepy messages or phone calls on your phone or computer it is important to keep the evidence- either save the messages or take screenshots from your computer and tell a trusted adult who can take you and the evidence to your local police station.

Threatening messages can be physically threatening you, your family, your pet or your property.   For example: ‘I know ur home alone right now, im gonna come beat you up’ ‘im gonna set your house on fire’ or someone sends you a photo of themselves not wearing any clothes or asks for a photo of you that makes you feel strange.   These are only examples, so if you are worried it is important to tell someone and they may be able to help you decide if you should take it to the police.

To take a screenshot follow the steps below:

Make sure the information you want recorded is visible on your computer screen. Hold down the ‘Ctrl’ key and press the ‘Print Scrn’ key. Open up a blank document in Microsoft Word Click the right mouse button and select ‘Paste’. Save the document, in a location where you can access the file at a later stage

The NZ police also have a site you might want to look at which has info on when you should contact the police http://www.buster.org.nz/
