As Director of Policy at Netsafe, Neil is the interface between the organisation and its government partners. Neil provides expert advice on the role and impact of digital technology in the lives of children, young people, family and whānau. In relation to education this involves providing advice to the Ministry of Education on trends and emerging issues. Neil’s other involvement includes chairing the Ministry of Education’s Online Safety Advisory Group, advising – as a member of the Bullying Prevention Advisory Group – on the positioning of online bullying publications including the Bullying prevention and response: A guide for schools (2015) and Te Pakiaka Tangata Strengthening Student Wellbeing for Success (2017). Neil also authored Digital Technology: Safe and responsible use in schools guide (2015).
Before joining Netsafe, Neil worked in the education sector in both practitioner and policy roles. He also worked for the Ministry of Education where he provided leadership for professional development to build e-learning capability in New Zealand schools. Neil informed national digital education policy development; and managed a work programme of national projects and initiatives to implement e-learning and ICT Professional Development strategies.
